When we moved into our home 3 years ago our kitchen was very boring. There was BIG, heavy faux built-in shelving above a built-in buffet in our breakfast nook area that made the ceiling seem so low and the room feel vet claustrophobic.
We started off the renovation by replacing the ceiling fan with a pendant light.
The space allowed for a small table but it was quite awkward for chairs to fit around the table in the breakfast nook area.
We took down the heavy faux built-in shelving, tiled the entire wall, exposed the brick chiney chase and applied a white wash to tone down the red brick.
We switched out the cheap-o laminate counter tops for dark stained butcher block. Faux painted the cabinets of the breakfast bar/coffee bar and instated aged brass hardware. For more information and sources check out my blog!
